East Cape Wahoo Strike

Setting out for each day to the water we had no idea that the wahoo gods had in store for us. I’d an experience this was likely to be considered a great day of fishing while the boat left the dock prior to the sun was coming up. I stayed up very late the evening before rigging all my wire leaders for the wahoo I was thinking of catching. In order we went out the water was calm over the sea of Cortes and as we came south our of cabo san lucas the sun beginning to break. Before we could fish we’d quite a good run in the boat, we had heard the day before that the wahoo chunk was going mad on the east cape. So after about three hours of hard running in the ship we made a decision to get the lines in the water. I set up the out riggers and my friend david set up the the cockpit pattern, to the fish as chief fernando got us.

It was about an hour or so after losing our lures in-the water that we had a huge wahoo strike. At one time four of the rods bent towards the extent that they appeared as if they were planning to break. We were fishing with actually light tackle and even brighter fishing line. We are only available for the sport of it, so we take no fish that we find, only photographs. Anyways as everyone else on the ship was going mad in the four supports yelling like they were planning to blow up. You could feel the excitement in the cockpit of the ship, it was so think you could have cut it with a knife. We reeled in the other lines that didn’t have fish on them to get them out of the way, and began to combat these four fish that we’d attached. We got our first wahoo for the boat after we lost one as a result of our very own fault, and she was large about sixty pounds. It is somewhat tough to get these fish un hooked and produced but you can do it once someone with some experience shows you the right way to do it. Well we did the same with the other two witch went as big as the first but nevertheless good size.

After that first hookup came it seemed like we were just on fire, with fish nearly fighting to eat our lures. We caught over 14 wahoo and 6 that morning stripped marlin, all tagged and released. I’ll remember today and I can assure that the people that were with me don’t either. So if you ever get the opportunity to fish baja don’t pass it up, but please release what you dont need and keep preservation in mind. Its an incredibly fragile eco-system on the market and we have to help sustain it.

Please keep efficiency in mind.
